Can't believe our Cancun trip has come and gone. It was so fun that we were able to celebrate our big anniversary with a last minute trip. We weren't really planning on doing anything big at first, but Mike was turning the big 3-0, I had graduated from nursing school, and it was anniversary #5, so why not!
I found a great deal online and we were able to plan our trip around work. I was able to find someone to work for me on Sunday, so we headed out Saturday after we both got home from work, talk about red eye flight! Thankfully I had pretty much packed up everything the week before so all we needed to do was stuff it in our bags and head out. I was a little nervous about leaving our pups behind, but I asked my neighbors to keep an eye out for them and make sure they were alive and breathing (plus it was an excuse to get to know our neighbors better too, double wammy)
We had two lay overs, one in Guadalajara and one in Mexico city. I had planned to take a taxi in Guadalajara to drive us around during our lay over, but then decided that we didn't have enough time. Instead we just hung out at the airport and closed our eyes for a bit.
Our next lay over was in Mexico city, here we had a couple of hours so we decided to head down town and see the Zocalo. After figuring out which bus to take we finally made our way to the city. During our bus ride we met some super sweet people who unfortunately told me how corrupt and scary Mexico city has gotten (talk about making me nervous) They suggested what places to visit and to carry our stuff close to us at all times. It was a super sweet couple who had lived many years in the neighborhood we wanted to explore. He let me know where to take the bus back and wished us luck as we headed out. I loved the telenovela vibes we got from Mexico city. The city was very lively with lots of street shops. There were so many people there. I can't believe what a huge city it is.
I decided we would just hang out at the Zocalo were all of the tourists were. It's hard to blend in with my blue eyed babe :)
We were going to do the tour of the Aztec ruins but we were having a hard time finding where to refill our bus card, which made me panic a little and so we decided to just take a taxi and head back so we wouldn't miss our plane.
Mexico city was so big and largely populated. I'm glad that I was finally able to experience it for myself, but it was a little scary having to hold our bags so close and tight. So sad that people are so poor that they have to turn to crime to survive. I think this was a one time visit kind of place.
